Virtual Activity: Map geological features on the Moon and aid researchers at NASA
In this interactive, science-based volunteering session, participants contribute directly to real lunar research by working with high-resolution images from NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter. Using simple web-based tools, volunteers identify, mark, and measure lunar surface features such as craters, rocks, boulders, and impact melt flows. The data generated through this activity helps researchers train AI and machine learning models, while also advancing scientific understanding of asteroid impacts, lunar geology, and future lunar exploration planning. The session is facilitated by a live host and includes a guided walkthrough, hands-on labeling activity, and reflection sharing. The experience is designed to be engaging, accessible, and collaborative, while contributing to real scientific research efforts led by the Planetary Science Institute (PSI), a nonprofit dedicated to advancing planetary science and space exploration research.
